23.09.2020 – With a generous donation for two professorships in robotics, Hilti and ETH Zurich are expanding their successful long-standing collaboration and strengthening the development of robotics at ETH. The two professorships, which have been made possible thanks to the Hilti Group and the Hilti Family Foundation Liechtenstein, represent an important step in developing Switzerland and Liechtenstein as a research location in the future-oriented field of intelligent machines. Dr Christoph Loos, CEO of the Hilti Corporation, is fully on board: “For us, expanding our collaboration with ETH in robotics and visual computing is a pioneering step in terms of technology development and the recruitment of outstanding employees.”
Additional boost thanks to the partnership
Robotics at ETH occupies an internationally leading position and is now receiving an additional boost, particularly at the interface of robotics and computer vision: the donation will enable the creation of an additional professorship and will also substantially strengthen the field of robotic systems, currently led by Professor Marco Hutter. Furthermore, the support sends a strong signal with regard to the newly established RobotX Center for Intelligent Machines, which was launched this year and brings together over 20 research groups in the field of robotics at ETH.
Covering the entire value creation chain
ETH Zurich’s new research and learning platform RobotX, to which the additional professorship will belong, combines skills and expertise in order to train new talent and attract robotics experts from around the world. “Thanks to the platform, we can utilise our combined strengths to develop robotics at ETH along the entire value chain, from basic research through to implementation in industry,” said ETH President Joël Mesot at the signing of the contract.
