23.01.2020 – At the World Economic Forum (WEF) in Davos, Siemens Switzerland Ltd and ETH Zurich announced an extension to their current strategic partnership. Over the next five years, ETH Zurich and Siemens have committed to a further intensification of their collaborative activities.
Population growth, urbanization and energy supply are among the greatest challenges of our time. Therefore, Siemens has made a donation to the ETH Foundation to promote the area of «Sustainable Construction/Digital Fabrication» and provide funding for innovative research projects at the university. «Jointly defined, the research projects will provide our experts with valuable results that they can utilize in our own product development activities in the building and energy technology sector», says Cedrik Neike, CEO of Siemens Smart Infrastructure. To which ETH President Joël Mesot adds: «Thanks to our collaboration with industrial partners like Siemens, we are able to accelerate our work on innovations that will make a real difference to our society».
The first project to fall within the scope of the extended cooperation was launched at the start of January 2020. It involves the use of machine learning processes in building design.
There is a long history to the collaboration between the two partners. In 2009, Siemens contributed to the funding of the new professorship in «Sustainable Building Technologies», enabling ETH Zurich to further expand its research and teaching activities in the area of «Sustainability and Energy». In 2014, the partners also launched a noteworthy project in Singapore aimed at enhancing the energy efficiency of office buildings. The «3for2» concept developed by ETH makes it possible to construct 3 floors in the conventional space of 2 without impacting occupant floor-to-ceiling heights. Using advanced building technology solutions from Siemens, ETH researchers were able to cut energy consumption by around 40% in the Singapore prototype. Alongside their collaboration in the building sector, Siemens and ETH Zurich also work closely together on shaping the mobility of the future.
